Race Consciousness

Parcon Resilience is a people of color centered practice. We (POC and white people) dedicate our work to undoing racism through an embodied movement approach.

People of Color Affinity Space

I share Parcon Resilience with POC to support the collective wisdom of the community in its embodiment and movement through the spaces we occupy.

  1. Contact Improvisation Community:

    A.POC CI Jam in NYC

POC CI Jams in NYC began December of 2018. Many POC, like myself, stopped coming to the regular jams because they felt minimized by color-blind progressive white people or triggered by micro or sometimes macro-aggressions. This space helps POC find contact and touch on our own terms through own forms of embodiment that take history, ritual and trauma into account in ways that a “neutral” white space has failed to do.

Transforming White Pillars

I advocate for people of color spaces and self determination within white institutions. I teach Parcon Resilience to white people to build capacity to feel and be present to an accountable history and reality, to make space for others and stay engaged, and to take risks to trust and follow the lead of POC.

I have had the pleasure of teaching Parcon at the Ontario Contact Improv Jam and running a small POC only Jam each time. The Jam community there is flourishing and passionate about creating inclusive, consenting and accountable community. I am excited and supportive of Leslie H and Vivek P in attempting to build their own regular POC only Jam.

I had the honor of facilitating the July 4th Jam for 100+ participants. The ED admin were fully supportive of our co-facilitation that relied on my Parcon Resilience framework. POC and white people processed in affinity groups enabling stronger self determination of POC and increased humility and understanding from white people during integrated time. For many, it was a success and steps forward in doing racial justice work.

The white student leaders bringing me to campus allocated some of the resources and time for my weekend of Parcon Immersion for POC only workshops. I appreciate this sentiment and hope to develop programming with POC student leaders to offer to POC affinity groups.

Physically Integrated Dance

Parcon Resilience is a physically integrated dance form. We (able-bodied & people with disabilities) seek to undo ableism in our daily lives, relationships and environments.

parc.connect.genise.quartet.png

Ideas about the body as broken, burdensome, and useless run deep in society forced upon people with disabilities and abilities alike to pathologize the individual rather than be accountable as a society for lack of infrastructure and education. The projects below highlight our organizing to date within communities with disabilities.

2. Axis Project - is a multidisciplinary center that provides high quality services for people with disabilities. Colleen Roche and Ione Lewis co-taught classes with me on boundaries, connection, group movement and play with objects in 2017-2018

Enhancement of the Creative Process

Parcon Resilience offers a practice to engage with others, objects, ideas and the environment in art and transformation. It is exciting to see how the Parcon tools supplement the wisdom practices that already exist in the group.

Dance companies

Parcon Resilience supports movers to deepen and broaden tactile and felt space connections and meaning making in relationship to the environment, others and objects. This includes developing an understanding for boundaries, desires and consent within all relationships. Companies who have experienced the work find it resonant and powerful for site specific work and somatic inquiry.

In March of 2018, Parcon Resilience offered two supplemental embodiment classes on the Black Panther 10-point program preceding the play Black Panther Woman.

Supplemental Workshops for Audience Engagement

Audience members are brought to personal engagement with the social themes of a work through the direct tactile, movement and meaning making experience of a Parcon Resilience supplemental workshop. All classes are physically integrated and will carry anti-racist analysis irrespective of the content and demographic served; key components of each workshop are safety, consent, community building, reflection and creativity.

Performance

ParconNYC is a performance collective that has won grants and been hired to perform Parcon to engage the public in novel site-specific ways. ParconNYC was a recipient of the Creative Engagement grant in 2017 through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council performing an interactive walking tour where audience members ended in a 25 person movement improvisation with the environment and each other by the end of the 6 site tour. They danced as part of the first INSITU cohort in Queens engaging large intergenerational audiences on playground apparatus. They also were hired by the Highline to kick off “Culture Shock!” their 2018 opening season day.

Movement Design Research

Parcon NYC was invited to be part of opening of a new studio called, MDR.STUDIO by Kenta Naoi. “The goal of this exhibit is to create a space to build community around examining our relationship with movement through an interactive installation, performance, workshops, and discussion.” They created a cool modular gym that interacts with the participant through light and sound!
